Matt Allford's Newsletter | Issue 17

Hey, it's Matt.

And there goes January - that was quick! Down here in Tasmania it's been great weather, and the kids are about to go back to school (finally!).

I spent a bit of time today putting together a list of tech I want to dive into and learn this year, and before I knew it the list was massive! This really is such a broad field with a lot going on. I don't know about you, but I often feel overwhelmed with the amount of technology flying across my socials that I have no idea about. But you know what, that's also ok. We can't know it all. I'll aim to take a breather, reevaluate in a few days, and narrow down my list to focus on 2-4 items that are relevant to me, and the work I'll be planning to do this year. If you feel the same, you're not alone.

Anyway, as usual I've pulled together some resources which came across my desk and I thought were interesting. I hope you find them valuable as well.

Talk soon.

GitHub Well Architected Framework

If you've worked in the public cloud environments, you're likely aware they each have a Well Architected Framework (WAF). Well now GitHub have released their Well Architected Framework, providing guidance and foundational design practices to help you succeed with building on GitHub.

As with any framework, there's a lot in here, but I'm a big fan of this. Out in the field I've seen a lot of customers just sign up to GitHub and get going, without considering a lot of the fundamentals and governance that ultimately comes back to bite them a bit as they scale and expand usage of the platform.

The Concept of AI Agents

There's a lot of noise about AI, I get it. But I really enjoyed this easy to consume post on the concept of AI Agents by Marco Gerber.

If you're not yet across what AI agents are, and what they aim to achieve, sit 5 minutes aside and check out the post below from Marco.

Scanning Your IaC

I think the benefits of IaC are clear by now, but writing IaC isn't immune to misconfigurations, security issues, or deviations from best practices.

Check out the following article from Code to Cloud outlining tools to use for scanning your IaC, and the benefits they provide.

Azure Orphaned Resources Workbook

Are you confident you have a good handle on the resources in your Azure environment, and they're actually being used? Might be worth checking out the Azure Orphaned Resources Workbook, you might be surprised about what it finds in your environment!

Not only is it good to clean up and keep things tidy, but it could lead to cost savings as well. And let's be honest, who doesn't like saving a few dollars in this new subscription and consumption based world!

GitHub Certification Learning Material

A bit of a selfless plug here, because some of the courses I have created are in these paths, but if you're looking at getting certified with GitHub, Pluralsight have recently published learning paths for three of the certifications. Check them out below, and if you're not a Pluralsight subscriber, scroll down this newsletter for a link to sign up for a 10 day trial!

GitHub Administration - https://www.pluralsight.com/paths/github-administration
GitHub Actions - https://www.pluralsight.com/paths/github-actions

Did you know I author content over on the Pluralsight platform?

If you're a subscriber, this is a shameless plug to check out my courses! I publish content in the IT Ops and Cloud spaces, make sure to give me a follow on the page below to get alerted when I release a new course.

Podcast Recommendation

After 17 newsletters, I'm starting to grow a bit thin on tech podcasts to recommend, so this section might come to a close soon.

However, I still have a few in the tank! This week's goes to a realtively new podcast, from none other than Scott Hanselman and Mark Russinovich, named "Mark and Scott Learn To ...".

If you've ever seen content from either of these guys, you know you're in for a treat. And you might be surprised about the content, as it's not all tech related either!

Clicking on the image below will take you to the YouTube playlist as it is recorded with video, but if you prefer a podcast version, it is available on your fav podcatcher too.

Hey, it's Matt. I hope you've all been out there vibe coding your ideas into MVPs. I'm looking forward to a bit of a break over Easter. The family and I are going away for three nights down to a spot on the east coast of Tasmania. I've got a couple of books lined up to read that I've found myself not getting to this year, but fingers crossed the weather holds out as it is starting to cool off down here as we approach Winter! I've pulled together a few resources I've seen recently, and thought...

Hey, it's Matt. Whoops, it's been a little while. Hoping you've had a great Christmas, and maybe able to step away from work for a week or two! I've got a goal to get this newsletter on a proper cadence in 2025. Hopefully fortnightly, but at least monthly is my initial goal. As usual I've collected a few pieces of information below that I hope you find helpful, as well as the usual podcast recommendation at the bottom. Talk soon, Matt. Hey, it's Matt. Whoops, it's been a little while. Things have been busy, we're doing some renovations at home and had to move out, and it is winter where I am, which has meant cold, miserable weather, with plenty of colds circling around. We're almost at the start of Spring, though! As usual I've collected a few pieces of information below that I hope you find helpful, as well as the usual podcast recommendation at the bottom. Talk soon, Matt. GitHub Hosted Runner Azure VNET Integration I...
