Matt Allford's Newsletter | Issue 9

Hey, it's Matt.

Since the last newsletter, I made the trek over to Silicon Valley for Cloud Field Day 18 where delegates from around the world heard from 7 presenting sponsors across an action packed two day event.

I must say the Tech Field Day team put on a fantastic event, and the sponsors melted our minds with amazing content and discussions. All sessions were recorded and have been published, make sure to check out the link above or the Tech Field Day YouTube Channel.

Other delegates have published a bunch of content which you'll find at the TFD website, and I'm planning on getting some content released over the coming weeks.

Fellow delegate Nathan Bennet hosted an after action report with a few of the delegates, unfortunately I was in the Uber starting the 25ish hour trip back home, but make sure to check this out for a 30 minute snapshot of the sponsors and the content.

Building a Culture for Effective Asynchronous Communication

When the COVID-19 pandemic took over our lives in early 2020, what followed were a plethora of articles, videos, and information on how to work effectively remotely. There was a lot of great information shared for the individual, but something that caught my attention earlier this month was a blog post shared by GitHub, titled How to communicate like a GitHub engineer: our principles, practices, and tools.

There's a lot of great information in this post for how to embed effective work patterns in your company culture, but the real gold here in my opinion is GitHub have shared some detailed information on GitHub (shock!), under a CC-BY-4.0 license, with more detailed information about how they put this in to practice. Yes, some of it is surrounding G

Business leaders: The benefits of Infrastructure as Code (IaC)

I've been chipping away for a little while at an article posted on Pluralsight, with the title mentioned above. I finally pulled my finger out in the last few weeks and finished it up. After the fantastic folk at Pluralsight made me sound better than I am, the article was posted earlier this week.

The goal of this article is to set the scene of IaC, especially for business leaders. What is it all about? What are the benefits? What are some drawbacks or things to be aware of?

Let me know what you think!

Leveraging ChatGPT and AI for Career Success

About a month or so ago I was lucky enough to be able to sit down (virtually) with the one and only Tim Warner, and pick his brain about all things AI, preparing for exams including Microsoft's new "open book" exams, Tim's "IT Straight Talk" YouTube series, and hear Tim's advice he would give to himself if he were at the start of his career!

Did you know I author content over on the Pluralsight platform?

If you're a subscriber, this is a shameless plug to check out my courses! I publish content in the IT Ops and Cloud spaces, make sure to give me a follow on the page below to get alerted when I release a new course.

Festive Tech Calendar 2023

It's that time of year again where the Festive Tech Calendar call for speakers is open.

But be quick! By the time this newsletter hits your inbox, you'll only have a few hours left to submit a session. There are over 100 sessions accepted already, it's going to be a busy December!

Festive Tech Calendar is a fantastic community event run by members of the community, aimed to be a month-long event during December, where you can share any and all content on any technical subject, but typically in the form of:

  • Deep technical content in the form of a video or blog post
  • Something actionable such as a workshop, hackathon, or project
  • Ask Me Anything Sessions
  • Live streams

Check out the main site by clicking on the image below, which has a link to sessionize with more information, and is where you can submit your session. I look forward to seeing the awesome content the community look to share to round out the year!

Podcast Recommendation

This edition I'm back on the Packet Pushers network for a podcast recommendation, which is going to Scott Lowe's Full Stack Journey. To pinch the description from the website:

"Full Stack Journey tells personal stories about the ongoing quest to become a full stack engineer: an IT pro who can move among multiple silos and work across multiple layers of the modern data center."

I started listening to this when it was first published in 2017, at which time I was pretty deep in data center technologies (VMware, Storage, networking, etc), and had an interest to push myself to other layers of the stack. Scott is well known in the VMware and open source communities (he's now over at Pulimi, after working for the likes of VMware and Heptio), and is a fantastic host of the show. Scott has a tremendous amount of knowledge to share himself, and gets a lot of value out of each and every guest.

Whether you're a developer, architect, IT pro, cloud or platform engineer, or something in between, I know there's a lot of value here in these podcasts. The Full Stack Journey is released once a month, and at the time of sending this newsletter there are 82 episodes to feed your ears!

As usual, click on the image below to get taken to the main page.

Hey, it's Matt. I hope you've all been out there vibe coding your ideas into MVPs. I'm looking forward to a bit of a break over Easter. The family and I are going away for three nights down to a spot on the east coast of Tasmania. I've got a couple of books lined up to read that I've found myself not getting to this year, but fingers crossed the weather holds out as it is starting to cool off down here as we approach Winter! I've pulled together a few resources I've seen recently, and thought...

Hey, it's Matt. And there goes January - that was quick! Down here in Tasmania it's been great weather, and the kids are about to go back to school (finally!). I spent a bit of time today putting together a list of tech I want to dive into and learn this year, and before I knew it the list was massive! This really is such a broad field with a lot going on. I don't know about you, but I often feel overwhelmed with the amount of technology flying across my socials that I have no idea about. But...

Hey, it's Matt. Whoops, it's been a little while. Hoping you've had a great Christmas, and maybe able to step away from work for a week or two! I've got a goal to get this newsletter on a proper cadence in 2025. Hopefully fortnightly, but at least monthly is my initial goal. As usual I've collected a few pieces of information below that I hope you find helpful, as well as the usual podcast recommendation at the bottom. Talk soon, Matt.
